‘I CAN’T FEED MYSELF BECAUSE OF MY CRAFTING ADDICTION’

Image
Jane Smith is a mum of five from Kingston Upon Hull and has been addicted to crafting for a long time, spending up to five hundred pounds a month on crafting materials. It all started for Jane when she was four years old and was introduced to knitting by her eldest brother Ken Coyne. At the age of seven she moved onto bigger things such as knitting when her eldest sister taught her how to sew.Jane began to talk about her family’s history. She mentioned that sewing is in her ‘blood’ as her Aunt was a seamstress, who inspired her and led her to develop a passion for it. She told us that when her fourth child, Angela was born that she took on the role as a Governor at her children’s school. She took to crafting again when she made over two hundred book marks for the pupils at school and all for free. “I never do things for money its more for pleasure of helping people.” She didn’t come back to her love of crafting for a long-time, this was until her two daughters got into jewelry making a...

A 23 year old’s take on the latest High School Musical series.

The arrival of Disney plus has allowed for some of us bored folk of the world to binge some of their beloved favourite Disney entertainment. Like most, the vast selection of Disney archives offering some of the best film and TV from the last 50 years, brought me to a complete loss of where to begin. You wouldn’t believe my eyes when I found High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. Yes, I do realise that the excessive use of colons is a bit of a tongue-twister. However, the moment I saw the show, I had to click on the play button and have a wave of memories of 10 year old me singing to “Got to go my own way" pretending I was Vanessa Hudgens singing to Zack Efron.   The show starts off on the first day back after summer with the new East High School drama teacher, Miss Jenn, watching High School Musical before she announces to the school that she will be putting on a production of High School Musical: The Musical which sends the school into a frenzy of excitement as East High w...

How are GEN Z coping in quarantine?

Everyone handles change differently, some cry, some embrace it and take on the challenge, others make jokes. Jokes to compensate the complete struggle they’re going through right now. Some Generation Z, known as Gen Z have never had to go through anything like social isolation before, but to be on lockdown that is a different ball park.   I think everyone is guilty here of saying 2020 was going to be the year, we get our lives together and be in control, healthier and fitter. Our tones changed when the first disaster hit in Australia with the deadly fires that destroyed millions of lives across the country. Then it got worse with a global pandemic, this couldn’t have been predicted.   When schools and exams got cancelled, Gen Z were at a loss of what to do with their lives now they’re stuck at home with their whole future at a halt. What are they doing to entertain themselves now they have no friends to hang out, work to go to or school?   There has been a lot of online ...

Angela Crocker talks to Chloe Povey and Hanna Woolgar two cosplayers who have experienced harassment while in costumes.   In 2014 Geeks for CONsent gathered more than 2,600 signatures calling for comic cons to create and enforce more effective anti-harassment policies.   Cosplaying is a community that continues to grow in popularity, more and more people are choosing to dress up in a wide range of TV and movie characters ranging from Game of Thrones’ Jon Snow, to cult anime protagonist Naruto. The rise in cosplaying has have a dramatic effect on multi-genre entertainment conventions, such as San Diego Comic-Con which will have over 150,000 attendees. However, when it comes to any large-scale event there is often underlying issues. In this case it’s the sexism that follows the female cosplayers, who can be made to feel uncomfortable from the attention of their outfits. It’s a taboo in the world of cosplaying and more needs to be done about it.   You hear the horror stories...
