How are GEN Z coping in quarantine?

Everyone handles change differently, some cry, some embrace it and take on the challenge, others make jokes. Jokes to compensate the complete struggle they’re going through right now. Some Generation Z, known as Gen Z have never had to go through anything like social isolation before, but to be on lockdown that is a different ball park.

I think everyone is guilty here of saying 2020 was going to be the year, we get our lives together and be in control, healthier and fitter. Our tones changed when the first disaster hit in Australia with the deadly fires that destroyed millions of lives across the country. Then it got worse with a global pandemic, this couldn’t have been predicted.

When schools and exams got cancelled, Gen Z were at a loss of what to do with their lives now they’re stuck at home with their whole future at a halt. What are they doing to entertain themselves now they have no friends to hang out, work to go to or school?

There has been a lot of online trends going around on Instagram such as donate 5, run 5, tag 5 a nicer one of the trends that helps people give to charities. However, another trend is downing an alcoholic beverage and then tagging some of your mates, which isn’t the most pleasant of challenges. These may seem like stupid and silly trends that have to come to light for your own entertainment but, in some ways it’s lovely to see your friends and to share their embarrassment to the world.

“Your love and support has raised money to go towards wellbeing packs, accommodation and travel for NHS workers and volunteers, provide longer-term mental health support for staff and families affected, and help patients leave hospital quickly and safely,” Run for Heroes said as donations passed £1m.

Houseparty is a video sharing app, founded in 2016 and became popular in 2020 with the light of our circumstance’s apps like Houseparty have become our new best friends. They’re currently the only way to see your friends. Even if its just through your tiny phone screen its almost as good as the real thing?  Gen Z spend hours talking to their friends on the app, playing the trivia games and quick draw. It’s a nice experience to see your friends after feeling so lonely. It’s a hard time for everyone right now loosing family members, loosing jobs apps like this make it feel like we’re connected again.

A lot of girls right now are struggling at home with their over-grown nails, crazy eyebrows and dyed hair that’s growing out. So, a lot of people have challenged themselves by becoming hair stylists and nail technicians. With no hairdressers open people are left with no choice but to cut their own hair, some do it nicely. Though a lot of males have resorted to shaving their hair off completely in the new trend which sometimes works out okay. Gen Z, have their own ways of coping although some older generations have joined in on shaving off the mops of their heads.

Dating apps have changed their features for those singles in isolation and Gen Z are one of the biggest users. Such as Tinder who have given everyone the passport feature which allows them to have more than one location. Some people have benefited from this new feature, talking to more people making them feel more connected. Don’t let COVID-19 stop you from believing that dates aren’t happening because this is the new age for dating in all strange ways. As one user on twitter stated that they both ordered food and had a glass of wine and had a date via FaceTime. Who says romance is dead, so all couples trapped together in this pandemic you can still have dates just not in the most convinient way.

'I'm happy we've been able to make our Passport feature, which allows you to connect with anyone, anywhere in the world, available for free to all members,' Tinder CEO Elie Seidman said.

The pandemic raises and brings new challenges everyday to our ordinary lives online lessons almost seemed impossible before this but now with Zoom and Microsoft teams some of Gen Z can experience education again. Like us all from NHS staff to other key essential workers there is a real struggle, everyone struggling to cope but with the use of the internet we can come together when it matters.
